2019 National Drug Control Strategy
On Thursday, January 31, 2019, the Office of National Drug Control Policy released the 2019 National Drug Control Strategy, which establishes the White House’s priorities for addressing the challenge of drug trafficking and use.
This strategy provides the strategic direction necessary for the Federal government to build a stronger, healthier, drug-free society. The overarching goal of the strategy is to save lives by engaging in a comprehensive approach that includes preventing initiates to drug use, promoting treatment services leading to long-term recovery, and aggressively reducing the availability of illicit drugs in America’s communities.

 TIP 61: Behavioral Health Services for American Indians and Alaska Natives
TIP 61 provides behavioral health professionals with practical guidance about Native American history, historical trauma, and critical cultural perspectives in their work with American Indian and Alaska Native clients. The TIP discusses the demographics, social challenges, and behavioral health concerns of Native Americans. It highlights the importance of providers’ cultural awareness, cultural competence, and culture-specific knowledge. The TIP also helps administrators, program managers, and clinical supervisors foster a culturally responsive environment for American Indian and Alaska Native clients. Specific topic areas include workforce development strategies, program and professional development considerations, and culturally responsive policies and procedures.

13th Annual Provider Conference
Registration is open for the 13th Annual Provider Conference, being held April 11-12, 2019 at the Lynnwood Convention Center. This conference is sponsored by the Association of Alcoholism and Addictions Programs (AAP).
Featured speakers include Dr. David Mee-Lee, addiction psychiatrist; Dr. Darryl Inaba, pharmacologist and licensed chemical dependency counselor; Lorie Dwinell, MSW, LCSW, providing clinical workshops on trauma and techniques to assist persons with substance use disorders who also have histories of abuse and neglect; and an update from Steve Freng, PsyD, MSW, of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area project. Nursing Care of Patients with Substance Use Disorders in Primary Care
The UW and WSU with the Department of Health will jointly offer a 15 week online course in addictions nursing. The goal is to provide updated information that nurses and their care teams can use to reduce harmful use of substances including opioids, tobacco, alcohol, methamphetamine, and other substances. The course will meet Wednesdays March 13-June 19 from 5:30-7:30 PM, and can be attended from a computer. All course materials will be made available to participants at no cost so future faculty can use and modify the materials to continue training the Washington State workforce.
