 New Clinician Screening Tool Available for Substance Use
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network has unveiled a new scientifically validated, online screening tool designed to assess a patient’s risk for substance misuse and substance use disorder, and assist the health care provider with prevention and treatment strategies. The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) Tool is available on the NIDAMED Web Portal and consists of a comprehensive screening component followed by a brief assessment for those who screen positive. NIDAMED disseminates science-based resources to health professionals on the causes and consequences of drug use and addiction, and advances in pain management.
The TAPS tool may either be self-administered by an adult patient (under medical supervision) or conducted as an interview by a health professional, but not intended to guide self-assessment or take the place of a health care provider’s clinical judgment. TAPS is one of several tools on the NIDAMED portal that can help providers quickly and easily introduce brief, evidence-based substance use screenings into their clinical practices. Clinicians can survey the tools available to determine which one best fits their practice.

2018 Recovery Month Toolkit Is Now Available for Download
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. The theme for the 2018 Recovery Month is Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.
The 2018 Recovery Month Toolkit and other materials are now available to view and download from the Recovery Month website. Communities across the country use these materials to organize events, issue proclamations, increase public awareness, and encourage individuals in need of services and their friends and families to seek help.

 Adult Marijuana Consumer Education Campaign Poster Available
The Washington State Department of Health recently introduced Know This About Cannabis - a campaign to educate adults, 21 years and older, about the risks, rules, and responsibilities around use of retail, non-medical, cannabis. The new campaign provides answers to frequently asked questions and addressing a wide range of issues, including state laws, health impacts, safe storage, traffic safety, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and secondhand smoke. "You Can" Campaign Posters
The You Can campaign is brought to you by the Marijuana Prevention and Education Program within the Division of Prevention and Community Health at the Washington State Department of Health. This prevention campaign is designed to educate 12- to 17-year-olds about the risks and consequences of marijuana use.

White House Campaign to Stop Youth Opioid Abuse
More than two-thirds of people in drug treatment for opioids reported their first use of opioids (other than heroin) by age 25, and in 2016, three-quarters of drug-related overdoses among those aged 15 to 24 were opioid-related.
However, according to the National Institutes of Health, youth stay in treatment at a third of the rate adults do. In addition, while over 25 percent of adults in treatment for heroin receive Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), only 2 percent of teens in treatment receive the same evidence-based care.
