2018 Monitoring the Future Survey Results

Teens report using vaping devices in record numbers. Opioid misuse is at record lows with marijuana use remaining stable.

America’s teens report a dramatic increase in their use of vaping devices in just a single year, with 37.3 percent of 12th graders reporting “any vaping” in the past 12 months, compared to just 27.8 percent in 2017. These findings come from the 2018 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of a nationally representative sample of eighth, 10th and 12th graders in schools nationwide, conducted by the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The annual results were announced today by the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), along with the scientists who lead the research team.

“Don’t Hang On To Meds” Campaign for Medication Safety in King County

King County has introduced a new media campaign and resources to promote safe storage and disposal of medications as one strategy to prevent opioid misuse. The county has over 100 secure drop-boxes, thanks to the Secure Medicine Return program.

The “Don’t Hang On To Meds” campaign uses comics, social media, and text messaging to promote the reasons why it’s important to lock-up and dispose of medications. It also creates awareness of local secure medicine return drop-boxes. Versions of the campaign materials are available for posting in King County and other communities in Washington.  The campaign website offers samples of social media messages, comic panels, and posters and postcards for printing.
