The Clearinghouse and ADAI Library staff will be attending the Substance Abuse Librarians & Information Specialists Conference in Berkeley, CA. SALIS is an international association of individuals and organizations with special interests in the exchange and dissemination of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) information. For the 3rd year, SALIS is meeting jointly with the Association of Mental Health Librarians (AMHL). We annually attend and support this conference.

Secure Drug Take-Back Options are Expanding Under Local Ordinances and a New Washington State Law

Secure and safe disposal of leftover medicines is getting easier thanks to action by local Boards of Health in seven Western Washington counties. In King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, MED-Project drop boxes are provided by the pharmaceutical industry at participating pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and police stations under local Board of Health ordinances. More than 170 drop box locations are available to residents free-of-charge for disposal of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including controlled substances like prescription opioids. Residents with limited mobility can request a prepaid return mailer. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are responsible for program costs and logistics. MED-Project programs will be developed next in Clallam, Whatcom, and Skagit counties under similar local laws. A new state law requires the pharmaceutical industry to expand their drug take-back services statewide, building on the local policy model. The Secure Drug Take-Back Act of 2018, championed by Representative Strom Peterson, is expected to result in more convenient and consistent drug take-back services across Washington by late 2020.

Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, Google and DEA Collaborate to Promote National Prescription Take Back Day, April 28th
Together with Google and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), we are encouraging families and individuals to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, April 28.
Google is making it easier for people to find nearby Take Back locations using Google Maps technology. Today, Wednesday, April 25, Google’s home page has a direct link to where individuals can find a Take Back location near them. They can also learn more about the Partnership’s science-based resources, including our Parent Helpline, where families can reach out and get help for their son or daughter struggling with substances.  Resource from Children's Safety Network on Dating Violence
It can be hard for pre-teens and teens to know when a dating relationship is unhealthy. How can someone know what is “normal” in a relationship if they haven’t been in one before? When does “teenage drama” turn into abuse?
The Children’s Safety Network (CSN) has released a blog post and mini-infographic on the facts of teen dating abuse. The blog post covers the different forms of dating abuse and how common and damaging it is.
CSN has also released a new resource guide. This resource guide provides links to organizations, programs, publications, and resources focused on preventing teen dating abuse. It is divided into six sections: (1) national organizations; (2) prevention programs and interventions; (3) data, fact sheets, infographics, and toolkits; (4) policy and legislation; (5) special populations; and (6) research.
